This week’s recipe on page 61-63 from Baking: From My Home to Yours*: Kugelhopf has been chosen by Yolanda of The All-Purpose Girl
Both Austrians and Alsatians claim credit for this yeast cake. One legend says the Kings of the East stopped in Alsace, traveling back from Bethlehem. In return for the warm welcome they baked a cake formed like their turban. Another legend says Marie Antoinette, the Archduchess of Austria and Queen of France brought the Kugelhopf from Austria to France. Since the Vienna Congress the Kugelhopf is spread over the whole world.
If you ever had a real Austrian Kugelhopf in Austria, you can’t be convinced by Dorie’s recipe. The taste was … nice. I missed the lemon zest and the almonds. The butter soak didn’t allow a thick layer of powdered sugar, which disappeared at once.
